Yellow Peacock Flower

Caesalpinia pulcherrima (L.) Sw.
Southeastern Mexico to Central America
Fun factThe peacock flower is the national flower of Barbados, where it is called Pride of Barbados, though it is native to Mexico and Central America rather than the Caribbean.

A fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree of the legume family with prickly stems and feathery, fern-like bipinnate foliage. Its flowers, carried through much of the year, have five petals and long protruding stamens; the wild type is orange-red and yellow, but yellow (f. flava) and pink (f. rosea) forms are also grown. It is the national flower of Barbados and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.
