Yellow Mangosteen
Garcinia xanthochymus Hook.f. ex T.Anderson
India to southern China
Fun factIts older botanical names, Garcinia tinctoria and Xanthochymus pictorius, both refer to the yellow pigment obtained from the tree.
A small evergreen tree with a short straight trunk and a dense, pyramidal crown of long, glossy, dark green leaves. Clusters of small white flowers are followed by rounded, pointed fruits up to 9 cm wide that ripen from pale orange to deep yellow, with a sour pulp used for preserves and jams. A relative of the purple mangosteen, it is a source of a yellow dye from its latex.
