Fun factSeedlings can bear in their third or fourth year, and a mature tree can yield 18–115 kg or more of fruit a year; the latex will permanently stain clothing.
An evergreen tree in the fig and mulberry family that bears the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, with individual fruits weighing 4.5–27 kg and growing straight from the trunk and main limbs. The dark green, glossy, leathery leaves and every other part of the tree ooze a sticky white latex when cut. The ripe pulp is sweet and aromatic; the unripe fruit is cooked as a vegetable and the seeds roast like chestnuts.
