Gardenia jasminoides

Gardenia jasminoides J.Ellis
Southern China and Japan
Fun factThe genus is named after Alexander Garden, a Scottish-born naturalist and physician of colonial Charleston, and the plant's orange fruits yield the yellow colouring used in East Asian foods.

An evergreen shrub of the coffee family grown the world over for its intensely fragrant, waxy, creamy white flowers set against glossy dark green leaves. The buds unfurl from a spiral, and the flowers, often double in garden forms, appear through spring and summer. Orange berries follow and have traditionally been used to make a yellow dye.
