Dwarf Palmetto

Sabal minor (Jacq.) Pers.
Southeastern United States
Fun factGrowth is very slow, so larger specimens are usually planted for quicker effect; the trunk stays largely below ground.

A small, slow-growing fan palm whose trunk is mostly underground, so it reads as a clump of large blue-green fan leaves rising from the ground. Tall panicles of small creamy-white flowers appear in spring and summer, followed by round purple-black fruits. It is one of the hardiest palms and is naturally a plant of swamps and floodplains.
