Date Palm

Phoenix dactylifera L.
Arabia to Pakistan
Fun factA single female flower cluster can contain 6,000 to 10,000 flowers, and around 40 named date varieties are cultivated in Oman alone.

A solitary, erect palm with an unbranched trunk clothed in old leaf bases and a crown of stiff, grey-green pinnate leaves. Male and female flowers are borne on separate palms, and a single female inflorescence can carry 6,000 to 10,000 small fragrant flowers. The fruit is the date, an oblong drupe with thick sweet flesh around a single hard stone; 'Medjool' is a large, soft cultivar that was formerly exported from Morocco.
