Cortez Amarillo

Handroanthus ochraceus (Cham.) Mattos
Central America to Argentina
Fun factFlowering is described as explosive: almost every tree in a population opens its yellow flowers on the same day, turning whole hillsides yellow for a few days.

A deciduous tree of the tropical dry and wet lowlands, reaching about 25 m with a trunk around 50 cm across and yellowish inner bark beneath the branches. It flowers while leafless, producing terminal clusters of yellow trumpet flowers, and the flowering is closely synchronized within a population, with most trees opening on the same day for about four days. The wood is dense and valued for construction and tool handles.
