Cabbage Palm

Corypha utan Lam.
India to northern Australia
Fun factThe palm flowers only once in its life, taking 30 to 80 years to bloom, then dies after fruiting; in June 2026 around ten gebang palms flowered at the same time at Lake Alexander in Darwin, Australia.

A massive solitary fan palm with a thick trunk and huge circular leaves several metres across. It is monocarpic: after 30 to 80 years of growth it sends up an enormous terminal flower spike carrying millions of tiny flowers, sets fruit, and then dies. It is one of the largest-leaved and largest-flowered of all palms.
