Brazilian Fire Tree

Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) S.F.Blake
Southern Mexico to Brazil
Fun factThe genus name Schizolobium comes from Greek words meaning 'divide' and 'pod', because the layers of the pod separate at maturity.

A fast-growing pioneer tree of wet tropical forest that can reach 35 m in its native rainforest. Young trees are typically unbranched and topped by a fern-like crown of enormous pinnately compound leaves up to 1 m long, said to be among the largest compound leaves in the plant kingdom. The leaves drop before flowering, and golden yellow flowers are then produced in racemes on the bare branches.
