Blue Jade Vine
Strongylodon macrobotrys A.Gray
The Philippines
Fun factThe jade vine appears on the reverse of the Philippine five-peso coin. At Kew, staff hand-pollinate the flowers; the first seed pods there were produced in 1995 after more than thirty years without any.
A woody climbing legume whose stems can reach 18 m, with trifoliolate leaves and hanging trusses up to 3 m long of luminous blue-green, claw-shaped flowers. In the wild the flowers are pollinated by bats, which hang upside down to drink the nectar. Pollinated flowers form fleshy green pods about 15 cm long.
