Black Pepper
Piper nigrum L.
Southern India and Sri Lanka
Fun factBlack, white and green peppercorns are all the fruit of this one vine, harvested at different stages and processed differently.
A woody climbing vine of the wet tropics whose small round fruits are the source of one of the world's most widely used spices. The glossy, egg-shaped leaves alternate along stems that need a trellis or a living tree to climb. Black, white and green peppercorns all come from the same plant and differ only in when the fruit is picked and how it is processed.
